With so many musical marvels on the Christmas market, which ones suit your mini Mozart, and at what stage? We’re here to lend a hand, with a range of cool musical gifts to help them on their way, from newborn days to the preschool stage.

You can introduce them to music even before they’re born, by playing your fave playlist or, if you’ve been blessed with pipes like Adele (lucky you), singing to them. For newborns this Christmas, carry on their musical journey with a sweet music box or a melodic bedroom accessory like the Dream Cloud Musical Portable Night Light, that lets you choose from choose from 10 lullabies, 4 natural tracks and a heartbeat.

At this stage there's lots of motion, but not much intention. The Halilit Calipso Band Set is designed for little hands to grasp and they'll love seeing what noise they can make. We also love the Moulin Roty Rain Stick, which makes the pitter-patter of gentle rain at their command and the Kiko+ Hamburger Set, a playful set of french fries shaker and burger maracas, made of beech wood and felt.

By the toddler stage, their musical toys can start to get a bit more technical, to help them make noise that sounds (hopefully) a bit more like... music. The Classic World Music Table features every satisfying bit of percussion going - a bell, xylophone, triangle, cymbal, plus two drums which they can play on the table or take off for a bit of bong-playing on the go. Brilliant!

Once they (and your ears) are tired of drum beats and rattling, you can move the game up a gear. The Fisher Price Classic Toys record player lets them turn their hand at playing DJ and create their own dance party. The Hape Magic Touch Piano Musical Toy is a truly genius pick that's got two modes: they can come up with their own melodies, or play along with six classic songs to help them find their rhythm. As they get older, three sheets of music will take them further on their musical journey, introducing them to musical notation, with coloured dots instead of notes.

At this point, genuine musical skill might be starting to emerge and you can start guiding them towards actual instruments. For little strummers, we have a great range of guitars and ukuleles, or the Jabadabado Recorder brings a blues-y look to the instrument we can all remember from our school days. We can't promise what they come out with will be all that tuneful immediately, but at least they will look cool while they're doing it!
